Launching across Asia Pacific, this initiative invites customers to engage in three core areas: people, community, and the environment, promoting positive change in both big and small ways.

In the Philippines, Starbucks will focus on youth education through the Community Store programs and expand Starbucks FoodShare. Starbucks Philippines president Noey Lopez shares about their community efforts and the value of collaboration.

At Starbucks Philippines, connection is central to our mission. We aim to create a welcoming space where everyone feels valued. Our "Get Together" campaign highlights the strength of these connections, encouraging individuals to unite around meaningful causes. How have Community Stores made a tangible difference in the lives of young individuals? 

Since opening our first Community Store in Abad Santo Tondo last September 2023 and our second in Maysilo Circle a year later, we’ve partnered with organizations like AHA! Learning Center, Young Focus and Mano Amiga Philippines to champion youth education. To date, we’ve positively impacted over 300 students through scholarships and learning programs, with a portion of our Community Store sales funding these initiatives.

Since its launch in 2022, we've donated nearly 2 million rescuable food from over 260 stores nationwide by partnering with The Philippines FoodBank Foundation and Grab Philippines. Planet Water Foundation has led to seven AquaTowers, it can provide clean water access to an estimated 12,000 individuals.

What initiatives reflect Starbucks customer and partner (employee) involvement?

We encourage customers to embrace sustainability by using for-here ware or their own tumblers for a PHP10 discount on their beverage. 

Meanwhile, our partner (employee) volunteerism and long-term partnership with HOPE has enabled us to build classrooms in underserved areas, recently reaching our fifth classroom in Bulacan. Additionally, our collaboration with Planet Water Foundation has led to seven AquaTowers, with the latest in Quezon. These AquaTowers collectively provide clean water access to an estimated 12,000 individuals. Together with The Starbucks Foundation, we also deployed an AquaBlock to provide emergency water access during the aftermath of Tropical Storm Kristine in Camarines Sur.

What can we look forward to?

We are building on the foundation of the “Get Together” campaign by celebrating International Women’s Month and the Global Month of Good throughout March and April. This will include a series of partner (employee) volunteer events featuring discussions with trailblazing women artists to inspire our youth beneficiaries. By creating a ripple effect of shared purpose, we will also put the spotlight on our partner foundations and the dedicated individuals who get together for good, through an engaging social media campaign designed to foster a chain of appreciation and positivity.

MILO, and the Department of Education (DepEd), its long-standing partner in grassroots sports development, today announced stronger collaboration and new sports programs through MILO Active Pilipinas.

Representatives from MILO® Philippines, Department of Education, Philippine Sports Commission, and the Philippine Olympic Committee joined students and teachers of Mandaue City Central School to launch the nationwide movement promoting active lifestyles and sports participation among Filipino youth.

MILO Active Pilipinas is a nationwide campaign designed to energize and inspire Filipino families to lead an active lifestyle. Under this campaign is a wide variety of on-ground and online sports programs, such as the National MILO® Marathon, MILO® Sports Clinics, and MILO® Barangay Liga, which encourage learners to participate in sports and enhance their physical literacy. Many of these programs are strongly supported by DepEd, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), and local government units.

At a high-energy sports day held at Mandaue City Central School, more than 4,000 students, parents, teachers and representatives from key sports stakeholders came together to experience the excitement of MILO Active Pilipinas through sports clinics, sports demonstrations, and meet and greet with MILO ambassadors such as six-time MILO Marathon Queen and homegrown talent Mary Joy Tabal and Southeast Asian Games Gold Medalist and MILO Sports Clinics graduate Jamie Lim.

The MILO Sports Clinics will grow from 800 to over 1,000 clinics to offer access to a wide range of sports disciplines and skilled coaches. The number of MILO Barangay Ligas will increase to 400 nationwide, fostering camaraderie, teamwork, and community spirit among kids at the grassroots level.

In addition to scaling up existing programs, MILO will introduce exciting new initiatives that tackle real challenges while celebrating the power of sports. MILO Safe Swim, in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross, will be rolled out to more areas in the country to help address the critical issue of drowning among Filipino children. This life-saving program is designed to teach water safety and swimming skills while giving kids the confidence to enjoy water activities. MILO will continue to recognize and celebrate exceptional Filipinos who embody these values in their careers and communities through the Champions in Life initiative. The search for more MILO Champions in Life in regional areas aims to inspire a new generation to see how the lessons from sports can lead to greatness in any field.

This year's Sinulog Festival in Cebu City drew over four million revelers, according to the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. This estimate included those inside and outside the Cebu City Sports Center, where the Ritual Dance Showdown was held, as well as those who watched the Grand Parade which spanned six kilometers.

Ajinomoto leads forum focused on health, nutrition, and sustainability with the future champions of our nation

It was a day of Empowerment, Learning, and Commitment to Health and Sustainability for Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation (APC) when they successfully held its Eat Well, Live Well: 2024 Youth Summit at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel in Cebu City. Building on the success of last year’s event, this year’s summit gathered over 150 enthusiastic young Filipinos, educators, and advocates in a day focused on wellness, nutrition, and sustainable living.

In one of the day’s highlights, a Youth-Led Output Activity encouraged participants to develop actionable ideas for living healthier and more eco-conscious lives. Groups collaborated to present innovative approaches, from reducing food waste to promoting planet-based diets, which encourage the increase in consumption of vegetables as reflected in Ajinomoto’s “Eat Well, Live Well” philosophy.

Strengthens efforts in Reef and Coastal Clean-up

In celebration of International Coastal Cleanup Day, Century Tuna initiated a school-based plastic recycling drive in several elementary schools in Mabini, Batangas. In partnership with HOPE’s Aling Tindera Waste-to-Cash program, elementary students were encouraged to collect plastic waste, exchange it for cash, and learn more about the Plastic Circular Economy - where all plastics collected and recycled are diverted away from nature to ensure that it won’t leak back into the open environment.

“The idea is to help everyone realize that by picking up that piece of plastic, you can not only earn a little extra money for your family but also contribute to solving this global problem and help clean up the Philippines and the world,” said Ms. Ilusion Farias, HOPE Managing Director.

Following the initiative and coinciding with the International Coastal Cleanup Day, representatives from Century Tuna, together with finalists from Century Tuna Superbods 2024 led by Runner-up Patrick Patawaran, CPFI employees, and volunteer divers participated in a coastal and reef cleanup activity in Mabini, Batangas. They were able to collect a total of 357 kilograms of plastic waste from both the shoreline and underwater.

The award-winning Century Tuna’s “Saving Our Seas” campaign is a continuation of its bigger mission to aid in marine conservation. Last year, the campaign was able to surpass its initial target of collecting 10 metric tons of plastic waste and avoiding it getting leaked into our seas.

Early this year, “Saving Our Seas” made notable progress with key events such as the Earth Day Palit Plastic Project in La Union and the Superbods Cleanup Drive in Subic Bay, Zambales. These efforts highlight Century Tuna’s dedication to the bigger cause of fighting plastic pollution and educate people on the idea of a Plastic Circular Economy.

The Tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis) is one of the Philippines’ most iconic animal species, second only to the Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) in global renown. Estimated to number over 10,000 heads a century ago, this dwarf buffalo once grazed across the entirety of Mindoro – until poaching, land conversion and a deadly outbreak of cattle-killing rinderpest nearly wiped it out.

By 1969, less than 100 were thought to remain, prompting the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to declare the Tamaraw as critically endangered, a precarious step above extinction.

Vigorous conservation efforts by Department of Environment and Natural Resources Biodiversity Management Bureau (DENR-BMB) via the Mounts Iglit-Baco Natural Park (MIBNP) and Tamaraw Conservation Programme (TCP) have so far staved off its demise.

“We estimate that there are from 574 to 610 Tamaraw left in Mindoro, with around 433 living within the MIBNP, where the largest population is concentrated,” shares MIBNP Park Superintendent Ellie Nuñez. Together, MIBNP and TCP are working to drive off poachers while convincing residents to stop deforestation and kaingin or the controlled burning of forest to make way for upland farms.

Tamaraw Month, celebrated each October, is when the bulk of Tamaraw conservation efforts are highlighted. "We observe Tamaraw Month every October, but we work hard to protect our Tamaraw 365 days a year,” says TCP Coordinator Efren Delos Reyes. “This month is jam-packed. We have everything from environmental outreach programs, native tree planting drives, town parades, poster making contests, even a bike ride for the Tamaraw,” adds TCP Assistant Coordinator Neil Anthony Del Mundo.

To help conserve this rare buffalo for Tamaraw Month 2024, the Biodiversity Finance Initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP-BIOFIN), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Forest Foundation Philippines (FFP) are asking people to download and play Animal Town, a mobile game about animals and biodiversity conservation launched in March 2024.   

“We want to introduce iconic and endangered Pinoy wildlife to a fresh generation of environmentalists,” explains UNDP-BIOFIN Philippines Country Manager Anabelle Plantilla. “With 30 million gamers in the Philippines including me, the potential for gamers to donate to wildlife conservation can definitely help save endangered species like our Tamaraw.”

They Need Funds. The rangers and wardens protecting Tamaraw badly need funding for salaries, benefits, field equipment and patrol provisions. BIOFIN is a global UNDP initiative across 41 countries with funding from the European Commission and the Governments of Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Belgium, Flanders, the United Kingdom, Canada and France. It contributes to closing the financing gap for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity by identifying, accessing, combining and sequencing sources of biodiversity funding.

In the Philippines, BIOFIN is working with the DENR to narrow the financing gap for the implementation of the Philippine Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (PBSAP), the country’s roadmap to conserving its biodiversity. Among its identified finance solutions are the improvement of biodiversity expenditure reports, supporting and strengthening policies, mainstreaming biodiversity in national and regional programs, increasing investments in protected areas and generating revenues from private individuals.

Animal Town donations will be managed by FFP, while DENR-BMB will identify conservation programmes to be funded. Some funds will go to Tamaraw conservation initiatives, such as halting illegal poaching for bushmeat, developing solutions to connect genetically isolated Tamaraw subpopulations and reducing human-wildlife conflict between the Tamaraw and indigenous communities.

“Tamaraw conservation is complicated and involves close, continuous coordination between the indigenous people who share the Tamaraw’s home range, protected area managers, fundraisers, policymakers, scientists and law enforcers,” adds D’ABOVILLE Foundation’s Emmanuel Schutz, who has been helping conserve the endangered buffalo for the past 12 years.   

“The Tamaraw is iconic of Philippine wildlife, but many lesser-known plants and animals need the country’s attention,” adds British Ambassador to the Philippines Laure Beaufils. “Introducing wildlife stewardship in a fun and casual way can help younger Filipinos understand and value Filipino wildlife of all shapes and sizes.” The UK government helps fund BIOFIN to advance the implementation of biodiversity finance plans, collaborate with the finance sector and repurpose subsidies. One of its key workstreams for the Philippines focuses on implementing a biodiversity finance solution focused on sub-national plans in protected areas, while helping develop Animal Town.

Freely downloadable, the app has been snowballing in popularity since its launch. “We have almost 20,000 users who have donated nearly PHP20,000, with donations trickling in monthly. We hope to generate more funds as players have fun building their tiny animal towns,” adds Animal Town App Developer Lord Gosingtian.

The inaugural batch of youth trainees under the Jollibee Group Foundation's (JGF),  Access, Curriculum, and Employability (ACE) Program and Youthworks PH is set to begin their on-the-job training in select stores in Cebu of Jollibee, Chowking, and Greenwich. This program is a collaboration between the Jollibee Group, and Primary Structures Educational Foundation, Inc. – School of Knowledge for Industrial Labor, Leadership, and Service (PSEFI-SKILLS), together with the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd), and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The 21 “Not in Education, Employment, or Training” (NEET) youth trainees kickstarted their work-based training at Jollibee Group stores This is the second part of their training after 10 weeks of classroom training that Jollibee Group funded, including the trainees’ allowances and accommodation. Apart from that, Jollibee Group and JGF also worked with PSEFI-SKILLS in the development of the curriculum for the Quick Service Restaurant Operations (QSRO) track, which is designed to fill the gap for professionalized personnel training in the food service industry.

The QSRO is one of the two tracks under the ACE Scholarship Program; the other track focuses on agriculture, which is done in partnership with technical-vocational training institutions to provide youth from low-income families the opportunity to stay in school and eventually improve their livelihoods.

The Supervised Industry Learning (SIL), an aspect of the Youthworks PH program, will run from September to December 2024. During this phase, the trainees will work alongside experienced store managers and crew members within Jollibee Group stores and will undertake a range of tasks including customer service, food handling, maintaining cleanliness and sanitation, and other operational procedures. 

Launched in 2018, YouthWorks PH is a private sector initiative to increase access to quality training and employment opportunities for unemployed and out-of-school Filipino youth. 

During the kick-off event last September 23, at Jollibee Parkmall in Mandaue City, Ruth Angeles, Chief Human Resources Officer for Jollibee Group Philippines emphasized the importance of SIL for the trainees.

“We are excited to welcome our trainees into the next phase of their program, where they will gain hands-on experience as skilled service crew. This part is crucial because it puts them in real-world situations and gives them the practical skills they need to handle the challenges of their job,” said Jollibee Group Chief of Human Resources Officer Ruth Angeles.

Investing in the future

As one of JGF’s core commitments in uplifting underprivileged youth, JGF President Gisela Tiongson underscored the value of investing in the future of the youth and creating pathways for their success.

Jessa Marie Jumao-as, one of the trainees of the YouthWorks PH program, said the workforce development training program has been a “transformative gift” for her. Prior to participating in the program, she used to be part of a cleaning service group, which made her realize that she is happy with work that deals with more people.

“I am very grateful to Jollibee Group and PSEFI-SKILLS for giving me the opportunity to become one of the ACE scholars and trainees of the YouthWorks PH program of PBED and USAID. I am grateful to them because they taught me new skills to be able to work in the food and beverage sector, and to have a better future. This has been a transformative experience,” said Jumao-as.

Youth unemployment is at 11.2%, despite the high number of vacancies in different industries.

To continue improving the skills and opening more opportunities for more NEET youth trainees, Jollibee Group and JGF, together with PSEFI-SKILLS, PBEd and USAID, will continue to expand the ACE Scholarship and YouthWorks PH programs by bringing it closer to more trainees in other parts of the country.
